Here’s a demo video, showing the actions that tap into the new, secret  Adjustment Layer actions in Photoshop Elements 11.  They also work super in Photoshop, CS3+. if you choose the Elements 11 Installer package, the actions and scripts are all installed for you and you’re ready to start using them in minutes!

A complete listing of the actions in this set is on the Hipster[VintageKit] page.  Hope you’ll check them out and offer some feedback!

Hipster[Light Leak] Actions + Gradient

Hipster[LightLeaks] Here’s the second release (but the first “official” release – see the adjustment layer actions & crop script release, too) of the Hipster[ ... ] effect series made especially for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

This first set included some Hipster basics: a few adjustment layer actions not readily available for Photoshop Elements users, the now-famous square crop script, some edge blurring (tilt-shift), vignetting and framing actions. It will only be free until they get packaged up and released – thanks for testing, testers!

This download includes 9 different light leak actions that place gradients on a new layer and makes some adjustments to blending and opacity – both of which are editable by you after the action finishes.

What is a light leak?  According to Wikipedia:

“A light leak is a hole or gap in the body of a camera where light is able to “leak” into the normally light-tight chamber, exposing the film or sensor with extra light. This light is diffuse, although parts within the camera may cast shadows or reflect it in a particular way. For most purposes this is considered a problem. Within the lomography movement it is seen as a positive effect, giving photos character.”

This set also includes a separate gradient (*.grd) file that can be loaded into Photoshop and Elements and used to create your own light leak effects, with whatever gradient style (linear, circular, reflected, etc) and blending mode (hard light, linear light, etc.) that you’d like, and they can be drawn as large or as tight as you need them.  Check out some examples here:

There are two versions available for download:  the first includes a manual installer for Windows that is specifically tailored to Photoshop Elements 8 – 11, and it will install the actions, thumbnails, .xml files and gradient for you.  It will also put the action set into the Action Player (Elements 8 – 10) and in the Actions palette (Elements 11)

The second version is a DIY set suited for Photoshop users & more experienced Mac/Windows users (or non-lazy Elements users!) who can add the files themselves. Install instructions are included.

Add-O-Matic 11 released!

My app for Elements, Add-O-Matic, is now in its newest edition – this newest version now offers support for Lightroom presets, too!

Add-O-Matic has been making life easier for Elements users since Elements 5, and now Lightroom users can take advantage of it too.  It’s especially simple if you use both Elements and LR – all your goodies and presets will be put away with a single click!

What?? It’s also 25% off for while??  Shut Up!   No, it’s true!

Framer Action Set

Framer_palette I don’t think I ever posted this:  Framer has 24 different framing options, and sits nice and pretty in it’s own space within Photoshop Elements 6 – 9 (Windows only).

Framer is in the Graffishop, and is priced pretty nice, too.  Check it out if you need to add some borders or frames around your images and you want to do it quickly while leaving yourself some options.

Editing and Creating New Document Defaults in Photoshop Elements

Iwas asked recently to make an action that will create a new document for Scrapbook size (12” x 12”).  In the North American version of Elements 8, that size is already there as a preset (click File>New>Blank , and choose it from the drop menu) so there’s no need for an action (although I can make one if you really want it….)

If you live in a place that isn’t the US, you can add this size by copying and pasting the code below into the file mentioned.

Open the file Default New Doc Sizes.txt located here in PSE 7 & 8:
Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements #\Locales\[your locale]\Support Files\
Scroll to the bottom of it (or within another section of the file – it will appear in the menu wherever you put it in this file):

;----------------------------------------------------------------------
; Standard scrapbook sizes
;----------------------------------------------------------------------
"scrapbook"
"12 in x 12 in" 12.0 12.0 inches 300 dpi unchanged 0 1.0
"8 in x 8 in" 8.0 8.0 inches 300 dpi unchanged 0 1.0
"6 in x 6 in" 6.0 6.0 inches 300 dpi unchanged 0 1.0
?

If you want to add additional sizes, copy the format above and add the size you want. For a 5 in x 5 in 300 dpi document, for example, you would just add the line

"5 in x 5 in" 5.0 5.0 inches 300 dpi unchanged 0 1.0

If you will never, ever use a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 document, simply place a ‘;’ at the beginning of those lines to force PSE to ignore them.

I like to make custom thumbnails, and even though PSE doesn’t care what size the .png is (see this article for reference), I like to keep them a common size – 64 x 64 px is the old standard.

So to my file, I added

"64 x 64"                     64     64    pixels    screen dpi RGB 8 1.0

and my preset is there.

One final note – be sure to save the file in Unicode format, or Elements won’t be able to read it.  Also, be sure to save a backup of the original just restore if anything goes wrong!

Curves preset: Faded Print ($1 download)

If you have Handy Actions, this Curves preset can be called after running the Curves action found there. You can use this preset to create an old faded snapshot look for your image.  It could be useful on scrap pages or ads, or anywhere you need a faded look to an image.

Add-O-Matic will accept Curves presets since version 8, so installing it to Elements is as simple as unzipping it to your desktop and dragging it into the AOM from there.  Then look for it in the drop menu of the Curves dialog:

To use it, first run Handy Actions’ Curves action, and select the preset. Then you can do additional tweaking of the overall curves, if desired (maybe an ‘S’ curve, or the “Inverted ‘S’ Curve” action).
