Sorta Apply Image and a Luminosity Action
Posted on: Mar 26th 2008 | Posted by: Graffi
Here’s a tandem of two actions (well, three really, since the Sorta Apply Image is really a two-action set zipped into one download).
The Luminosity Mask action simply creates a new layer based on the luminosity of the input image, and creates a mask from it. It then doubles the layer with an inverted version. Tough to explain, but it gives great results both as a starting point for editing your over- or under-exposed images as well as an end result by itself.
The Sorta Apply Image action set tries to emulate what the Apply Image adjustment does in Photoshop CS3 - take the lightness and darkness of an image and “apply’ them back on top with a different blend mode. It’s another great way to really fine tune your image as well as add some funky effects. Experiment with different blend modes for some really neat images.

a Stronger Contrast effect

Increase
Contrast
An adjustable contrast effect - for a gritty urban look, or even to help create the Beowulf movie look.
This image is especially effective on an image that already has a dark background. It works by selecting the RGB values, duplicating them, and multiplying them, while creating an inverted value for a lighter overlay to accent shadows. In other words, shadows are darker and highlights are lighter - got it?
You can also run the effect twice for more intensity and grittiness. In the second example, I simply removed the action-created Light layer and ran the action again, changing the Contrast Lighten layer’s blend mode to Lighten.
Download it and experiment with it. I’ve found several different ways to use the layers to get interesting results with changing the opacity level and blend modes - and even the stack order - of the resulting layers.
