Repairing and Rebuilding the database in Photoshop Elements

So the questions I get asked most often are below - here's some solutions for the most common issues:

The first thing to do, before running any of the installers or the Add-O-Matic, is to make sure Elements (including the Organizer and any of its components) are not running. Use Task Manager to make sure they are closed. Elements can't rebuild the internal database if any part of it is accessing the database - so shut it down first!

There's one thing, though, that generally is the easiest and fastest fix for most issues. The mails generally go something like this:

Dear Graffi - I added all my things with your installers, but when I go back into Elements there's nothing new in the drop menu! What happened?

or

I added my actions using the Add-O-Matic and started Elements, but they're not there - What's going on?!

What's happened is that the database hasn't recognized the new items yet, for a number of reasons. Here's a few fast tricks you can use to kick-start the database:

  • With Elements open and the Effects palette visible, click away from Photo Effects into another category - Layer Styles, for example, which is the second icon at the top of the palette. Then click back into the Photo Effects section (the third icon) and use the drop menu to locate the new category installed. More often than not, the database hasn't had an opportunity to adjust the display, so this is a way to "refresh" the palette view.

  • Another option to get things right is to restart Elements. This will finalize any database rebuilding and get things put away in their places.

Sometimes, though, something has blocked the database from finishing its update (you started working too soon while the database is still rebuilding in the background is the most common reason). Sometimes you simply have to manually force a rebuild of the database. It's fairly simple to do, but it does take a good 15 or 20 minutes to complete. Here's how to do that in Photoshop Elements:

  • (By the way, the file paths below are for Windows 7 & Vista - if you're using XP, substitute C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data for everywhere you see C:\Program Data\ )

Turn on hidden folders' visibility first by clicking Start>Control Panel>Folder Options, and choose the View tab. Scroll down to the section concerning viewing hidden files and folders, and toggle it ON. Click OK enough times to exit that dialog.

Then navigate to

  • C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\#.#

and locate the file "ThumbDatabase.db3" - rename it "ThumbDatabase.db3.OLD".

Next, navigate to

  • C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\#.#\Locale\en_US

and rename the database file there, too, from "MediaDatabase.db3" to "MediaDatabase.db3.OLD"

*Quit all other programs (email, web browser, etc.) and restart Elements.

Your entire database will be rebuilt, and this will take a bit of time (around 15 ~ 20 minutes or so, maybe a bit more or less depending on your computer's speed, how many other utilities are running, how much stuff you've added to Elements, etc.)

When it finishes, restart Elements again, and all your menus should appear populated.

I hope this solution works for you, but please leave any comments below - I'd love to hear if this helps!

This last solution was magic! Thank you!
And it didn't take long to rebuild the database either! Actually, it's probably way quicker than trying any other other work-arounds! Sure saves a lot of frustration!
Thank you very muchly!

I keep getting the message that the layer mask for photoshop is not a valid photoshop file. I have elements 8 and windows 7.

Hi, Eleanor: make sure you use the layer mask action on a layer that is NOT the background layer.

OR: are you trying to open the layer mask .atn file, rather than using it from the Effects palette?

This fix worked for me, I am working with a new computer, Windows 7 and PSE 9, all actions are now where they belong, took about 15min. Thank you so much

I keep getting a "cannot copy" message even when I'm just installing 1 ASL file, also, is there a go back button or do I have to close and reopen for each file that I'm trying to load?
Thanks for your help, I have high hopes for the program...

Hi, Jennifer: make sure the file is unzipped before dragging it into the AOM. Even if the zip archive is open and you're dragging from there, the file is still compressed. I usually drag items onto my desktop, and then drag into the AOM from there.

You can add up to 50 files at a time to the AOM, and they don'[t have to be all the same type. You can drag in some styles, actions, brushes, shapes, etc., and then click "GO!" and the AOM will sorth them all and get them all put away in the right place. To add another batch of 50, though, you will have to restart the AOM.

I ran this rebuild and it rebuilt everything but now I am missing ALL of the actions I had previously installed. I still have them all on my computer so I just got a new folder, and copied them all in there and it still isnt loading the actions even after a complete reboot of my computer. :( Not sure what to do at this point. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, Callie: they don't need to be in a new folder - put them in the same directory as the rest of the actions, thumbnails and .xml files. Then allow the database time to discover them, "refresh" the effects palette by clicking into layer styles section, and then back into pjoto effects, and you should be good to go.

i have done all of the above, & still no actions! grrrr, so frustraing. :( thanks for trying to help though.

I also ran this rebuild and now all of my previous actions are gone!! I tried a few differnt things that you suggested and can't get them back into the effects palette. Can you please help??

I rebuilt pse database per the instructions, however, I still have the same issue when adding new actions, they don't show up. Would I delete the re-named database, restart, and then re-name the original database file again? Would this cause any problems?

you shouldn't have to rebuild each time. The main thing I cannot stress enough is to allow PLENTY of time for Elements to discover, catalog & then display the new items. To refresh the pallet, click away from Photo Effects into the Layer Styles section, then click back into Photo Effects. Use the drop menu, and the new effects will display once they are discovered & the internal database is finished rebuilding.

ok, I did all of this. Followed all the instructions, rebuilt the database, and now my editor won't even open. The organizer still works, but if I try to open my editor, it opens, then automatically shuts down and creates a crash report. I don't know what to do!

hmm, I guess I should answer these questions here instead of emailing individually. Rest assured, dear visitors, that the above questions have been answered!
